Fuji 360: Winter Trail
[ OVERVIEW ]A 4-Day Journey Around Japan’s Sacred Peak
The Mood: Deep indigo, the scent of winter plums, and the sharp, clear silhouette of a snow-capped peak. This journey is for those who want to see Mt. Fuji from every angle—not just as a backdrop, but as a living presence. We move from the artisan's vat to the monk's chanting, trading crowded viewing decks for quiet beach mornings and the warmth of a mountain hearth.
The Daily Path
Day One: Coastal Coffee and Secret Shrines We depart Tokyo and head for the coast, stopping at Shichirigahama Beach. Here, we enjoy coffee with the sound of the Pacific as we hope for our first glimpse of Mt. Fuji across the water. After a simple, early lunch of handmade soba noodles, we spend the afternoon in Atami. We explore the light-filled galleries of the MOA Museum of Art and wander through a historic garden where hundreds of plum trees should be in their first delicate bloom. Before checking into our hotel, we visit Kinomiya Shrine to see its 2,000-year-old sacred tree. We end the day with a group dinner at a local neighborhood favorite.
Day Two: Indigo Vats and Temple Gates The morning is hands-on as we visit a local indigo-dyeing workshop. You will learn the rhythm of this ancient craft, dipping and folding to create your own unique handkerchief. From the artisan’s studio, we head to the Numazu outer market. A local friend will walk us through the stalls before you use your lunch coupons to sample the market’s bounty. While the seafood here is world-class, there are plenty of delicious non-seafood alternatives available. In the afternoon, we walk through tea fields that are a deep, winter green—a stunning contrast to the white peak of Fuji. After a stop at the architectural World Heritage Centre, we climb into the mountains of Minobusan. We check into our temple home for the night and share a quiet, traditional Buddhist dinner.
Day Three: Frozen Caves and the Village Hearth We wake early to join the monks for their morning practice, a powerful experience of drums and chanting that resonates in the crisp mountain air. After breakfast, we travel into the forest to explore an ancient lava cave, where ice pillars grow from the floor in the winter dark. We spend the middle of our day at Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba, a village of thatched-roof houses. Here, we can make our own Japanese incense to take home and warm up with a bowl of houtou—the hearty, flat-noodle miso stew of the mountains. Before heading to our final hotel, we stop by Lake Kawaguchi to see the mountain reflected in the water. We enjoy dinner together at our hotel, which overlooks the twinkling lights of the valley.
Day Four: Sweet Harvest and the Floating Future Our final day begins at Daizokyo-ji, a quiet temple that feels far removed from the modern world. We then lean into Yamanashi’s reputation as the "Fruit Kingdom," visiting a local farm to pick sun-ripened strawberries and browsing a farmers' market for local treats. For lunch, we head to a nearby winery for fresh pizza and a tour of the cellars to see how the region’s famous Koshu grapes are transformed. Our journey concludes with a glimpse into the future at the Maglev Exhibition Center. Here, we explore the world of superconductors and the incredible technology behind trains that "float" above the tracks. We return to Tokyo by 5:30 PM, having completed our great circle.

This is a slow-travel journey. We aren't hiking mountains, but you should be comfortable walking 3–5km a day on varied terrain—sandy coastal paths, stone temple steps, and the uneven floors of ancient volcanic caves.
-
Space in our minivan is limited to one carry-on sized suitcase and a daypack. Since we return to Tokyo, we recommend leaving your large luggage at your Tokyo hotel. Most hotels are happy to store bags for returning guests.
-
No specialized gear is required. Just bring comfortable walking shoes with good grip (easy to slip on and off for temples!). Since early morning and evening temperatures can dip toward 0°C, please bring a warm outer coat and plenty of adjustable layers to stay cozy during our mountain mornings and comfortable under the daytime sun.
[ our kind of traveler ]Is This Your Path?
We don't try to be everything to everyone. Our journeys are for people who want to slow down and see a side of Japan that most tourists miss.
You will love traveling with us if:
You are curious. You want to hear the story behind the temple or the family history of a miso maker.
You like good company. We travel with just 12 people. It’s small enough to feel like a group of friends having a great dinner.
You are flexible. You’re okay with a detour if it leads to something beautiful. You enjoy the "unmapped" moments.
You are respectful. You’re happy to follow local customs—like taking your shoes off or enjoying the quiet of a mountain inn.
You stay positive. You bring a "can-do" attitude and a smile to the trail, even when things are new or different.
